How to research & file for new claim

OK, I've been mining (learing) for about 5 years now as a GPAA & LDMA member and have a opportunity for a new claim. I've read many guides regarding how to file a new claim and kinda understand the process but due to your superior knowledge shown on this and the GPAA forums I was hoping you would cover this process.

Thanks

Ahh, Is this topic not covered here?

Suggest you look up "Mining Claim Procedures" published by Nevada BLM - a free pdf.

BLM or not, it is a pretty handy publication.

Thanks 1866,

My specific question is regarding an existing claim that my have been let go. I guess the only way is to go to the BLM field office and research the public records as there is no longer any website database. And how can you tell if the claim is available to claim?

Thanks

There's still a database.

Use the Public Reporting Application of LR2000. Under "mining claims" select "Geo Index" and put in the Township, Range and Section. You can pull up all existing active claims.

From there, you should print off each claim report and take those to the respective county recorder and pull the location notices of those claims from their records. Get copies, as these will show the precise locations/boundaries of each claim, which BLM does NOT provide.

For the best results, you should draw each claim out on a topo map that shows 1/4 sections. This will show you what is and what isn't claimed.
